Cyzmic_swAy
Cyzmic swAy is a sound and body-based performance that explores texture and resonance with respect to the architectural extensions of body and sculpture. Through movement, sound, and voice Cyzmic swAy parses questions of posthuman materiality that propose a body enmeshed in the matter and reverberations of a vibrant world.
Cyzmic swAy explores the materiality of metal through the ideas of vibrant materialism and agential realism. Inspired by Jane Bennett and Karen Barad, it presents various sound sculptures and feedback loops, layered to create a rich sonic tapestry. The inclusion of stones, pop rocks, and a white noise machine set to โSurf #1,โ point towards the earthly origins of all things and the strange way human creations replicate naturally occurring phenomena.
Bennett specifically writes about the liveliness of metal and its poly-crystalline make-up, whose structural irregularity makes it especially apt for resonance and electric conductivity. Our bodies too show incredible skin conductivity and vocal resonance, and with the crystalline nature of many body tissues such as bone and fascia, we have much in common with metal.
Cyzmic_swAy was commissioned by New Music Edmonton. It was developed over many months in 2024, during which I performed small excerpts to audiences in Chicago, Kansas City, and Edmonton. A full first iteration was performed at Mile Zero Dance in early 2025, presented by New Music Edmonton. ๐ชจ๐โ๏ธโ๏ธ๐ฉป๐๏ธ๐๐งท
