Molecular Incantations||Sonic Telepathy (MIST)

MIST is a performance and sound installation built around a handmade wearable electronic instrument. Contact microphones, miniature speakers, springs, vibrators, fans, and other repurposed electronics extend across the body, transforming movement, touch, voice, vibration, and proximity into sound.

As I dance, the instrument enters into shifting relationships with my body, the room speakers, and the architecture around me. Feedback swells and recedes, objects resonate, motors vibrate, and small changes in orientation or distance radically alter the sound. I compose by moving and listening, continually tuning the system through my body.

MIST imagines the performer, instrument, and surrounding space as an interconnected sonic ecology. Drawing from queer materiality, analogue electronics, and embodied listening, the work explores intimacy between bodies and technologies and the strange forms of agency that emerge between them.

In its installation form, the wearable instrument disperses throughout the gallery. Its components remain active as a shifting sonic environment before reassembling on the body through daily performance activations. The installation and performance become different states of the same instrument: performance gathers the instrument onto the body; installation redistributes it throughout the architecture.
